Assignments

Late assignments WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED!!  Partially completed work will not be accepted.  Keep in mind, that it is up to the teacher’s discretion to accept late assignments. However, there is more than enough class time to complete assignments. Also, due dates will be given for assignment unless otherwise specified by the teacher.

Makeup Work: Absent students are given the number of days they missed to turn in any missing assignments. You, the student, will be responsible speaking withfor checking Google Classroom for the work you’ve missed! School-sponsored absences must be discussed with the teacher prior to their occurrence, and students are personally responsible for getting their work turned in within a timely manner.

Summer Reading

Research shows that students who read independently become better readers, score higher on achievement tests in all subject areas, and have greater content knowledge than those who do not. The amount of independent reading done outside of school has also consistently been found to relate to growth in vocabulary, reading comprehension, verbal fluency, and general information.  Also, as reading skills improve, students are better prepared to comprehend other classroom reading materials and subjects.

As educators, we strongly believe in students reading independently daily.  To encourage reading outside of the school setting, McKinley Middle Magnet ELA teachers are incorporating independent reading requirements at each grade level.  These requirements are considered “non-negotiables” and will result in both a weekly and nine-week grade in ELA.  Guidelines are as follows:

  • Daily independent reading is required of all students.  (At least twenty minutes each day.)

  • All students must maintain a reading log documenting independent reading.

  • Reading logs must be signed by parents.

  • Reading logs will be checked weekly for 5 points and recorded in JCampus. (50 total points each nine-weeks)

  • All students are required to complete a project on one of the books they read.  (Project choices will be posted on ELA teachers’ websites and the MMAM website.)

  • Projects are worth 50 points and must be submitted to the teacher by the deadline.

  • STUDENTS MUST READ WITHIN THEIR ACCELERATED READER ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development).

Although completing AR quizzes on independent readings is no longer required for a grade, it is strongly encouraged.  Students may earn up to ten bonus points each nine-weeks by completing quizzes.  In order to earn bonus points, students must score 85% or above on AR quizzes.

To assist students who may be struggling with independent reading, Mrs. Lee (MMAM librarian), is here to help.  Visit the Parent Resource page on the Library website, which can be accessed through the MMAM website under Academics. This page includes information on monitoring your child’s reading level, checking out ebooks, and scheduling conferences with Mrs. Lee and your child.
